Porsche Thinks The Press Is Way Worse Than Bloggers [Porsche Panamera]

If you signed yourself up for updates on the development of the Porsche Panamera at the automaker's minisite, you may have already received a packet of super secret advertising containing expensive ultra-glossy "first official images" of the new Panamera. It also contains what we assume is an unintentional backhand at the press corps.

Printed right on the thin black sleeve holding the photographs is the following:

Spies would risk life and limb for them.
Bloggers would lie, cheat and steal for them.
The press would kill for them.

And you happened to have them in your hands right now.

The vague "them" they're referring to is of course the images contained therein, which would have been pretty clever marketing if we hadn't already seen the complete reveal of the car. The part about this we enjoy though is we bloggers would only lie, cheat and steal for them if they had been anything important, but the press, well they would kill for them! Clearly, Porsche holds bloggers in much higher esteem than our dead tree brethren.

German Beaters Colonize The Streets Of Berkeley, France Considers Emergency Citroën Airlift [Down On The Street Bonus Edition]

This is Down On The Street Bonus Edition, where we check out interesting street-parked cars located in places other than the Island That Rust Forgot. In addition to being a four time DOTS honoree and Volvo race driver, WhatWouldJesseDo is also a devoted DOTSBE hunter. This time his travels have taken him to Berkeley (which may rival nearby Alameda in terms of Cool Old Cars Per Square Mile, People's Republic or not), where he's found three vintage German chariots parked in the same neighborhood. Apparently that wretched-looking 356 is an everyday commuter and logs hundreds of miles each week. Jump away for many photos.

Porsche Panamera Spotted Continuing World Tour With A Drive In Arizona [2010 Porsche Panamera]

At this point, who hasn't caught a 2010 Porsche Panamera gallivanting about somewhere in the world? Porsche seems determined to test the car absolutely everywhere before releasing it to the public, and here we see it speeding along the Arizona I-10 in Phoenix. Honestly, unless someone bags one with the "ha-ha we fooled you" pudgy body removed so we see a car that doesn't suck, then it's not a surprise anymore. Still feel free to keep sending us pictures of your encounters, like these of the interior (the only part of the car which doesn't make us gag), whether it be at a Bennigan's in Iowa, a truck stop in Belarus, or a ramen joint in Tokyo. Just pick a spot somewhere, doesn't matter where in the world, eventually a Panamera will drive by. (Thanks for the pics Sean)

Sportec SPR1 T80: Fury From Within

Sportec SPR1 T80: Fury From Within
When you think about the Swiss, you think about their innovative ways of squeezing as many essential elements into a product as humanly possible. Just look at their watches - they can fit anywhere from 100 to 1,000 parts in a wristwatch. Sports car tuners Sportec follows the same philosophy in their vehicles. Based on the Porsche 997, the SPR1 T80, for instance, manages to get 858 hp from a six-cylinder boxer engine. It does so by slapping a pair of turbos to the 3.6 liter, 24-valve flat six. They then matched the powerplant to a permanent four-wheel-drive system. Result? 0-62 in 3 seconds onwards to a top speed of 236 mph But all this power doesn’t mean that the car’s out to destroy the planet. It’s still Euro IV emissions compliant. Stopping duties are shouldered by the ceramic discs and the select carbon fiber parts mean that the car’s both light and nimble. All this power comes great responsibility, a responsibility to stay alive and keep the others around you alive as well. $TBA.

BREAKING: More Porsche Panamera pics surface

Click above higih-res image gallery of the Porsche Panamera

Thanks for the heads-up to our friends at Supercars.net, where a forum poster has uploaded more official shots of the Porsche Panamera (apparently lifted from Autoweek.nl) ahead of its official reveal extravaganza scheduled for Monday. The first photo and technical details trickled out last night, and the new batch gives you a better view of the car's controversial rump, which is already polarizing enthusiasts the world over. It's not so much that we think a round booty is a bad thing -- it's just that Porsche has done it better before. Or have you guys already forgotten about the awesomeness that's spelled 9-2-8? Anyway. Have a look at the gallery, and stand by for more on Monday (or whenever the next group of pics gets leaked).

Consumers not interested in stop/start from Porsche

Click above for high-res gallery of the 2009 Porsche 911

Stopping an engine when it's not necessary for the operation of the car seems like a common sense move when fuel efficiency and emissions are the main concern. When performance is the biggest priority, though, the added weight and complexity of a stop-start system might not be worth it, at least not for drivers interested in the Porsche 911. Instead, Porschephiles would prefer that their sports cars remain as pure as possible, which means a powerful but conventional flat-six engine at the rear of the vehicle. That said, Porsche does intend to a good number of PDK dual-clutch transmissions as opposed to the traditional three-pedal setup, which seems contrary to the mission of a pure drivers car. Porsche also looks to improve overall efficiency by reducing the weight of its Boxster and 911.

On the other hand, stop-start technology seems like a no-brainer for less-sporty vehicles like the Cayenne and the upcoming Panamera, which are also likely to be given a full hybrid drivetrain as an option. Diesels, long the bane of the Porsche aficionado, are also in the works for upcoming Porsche models.

Spy photographer Herschel Brown, autoblog.com reader, snagged this green Panamera mule near Carson, CA. First impression: looks bigger. Porsche has done a good job of uglifying these Panamera mules from the B-pillar rearward in the hopes of keeping the car’s true shape a secret for as long as it can.
