Yes, length matters. More cabunders!

Büssing cabunder truck

In our recent post on the Steinwinter, Jetto’s truck from TV’s “The Highwayman,” I mentioned that Manfred Steinwinter was influenced in his design after seeing the Büssing Decklaster, another cantilevered cabunder design from 1965. According to onlinetruckers.org, both front axles steered, and the whole rig ran on air suspension.

Büssing cabunder

Büssing, which claims to have built the world’s first six-cylinder truck engine in 1909, was around from 1903 to 1971, when it was taken over by MAN. I’ve yet to find out exactly how long Büssing produced the Decklaster, but it seems to have lasted beyond the takeover. The one above seems to appear at truck shows around Europe.

Butler Brothers cabunder

I also happened to come across reference to several other cantilevered cabunders, including this Butler Brothers timber truck at BigLorryBlog.

Strick Trailer cabunderSeveral other references (including one from oldmertz in the last post) also mentioned the Strick cabunder, a pair of 1970s prototype from the Indiana-based trailer company. this one appears to be based less on maximizing the length of the load as it is on minimizing the truck itself to haul more weight within certain limits. According to an old issue of Lee Wittmann’s Truck Stuff newsletter, both prototypes are still around – one in Germany, the other in the hands of one of the developers.

The industry ultimately benefited from the Cab Under as it dramatically illustrated the need for increased load capacity per truck & driver. This was just one of the many elements in opening the subject of transportation productivity. In time, length and width laws were changed benefiting shippers and ultimately consumers.

Colonia cabunder

Finally, I came across this cantilevered cabunder on a German heavy equipment forum. Colonia appears to be a prominent construction company, and the cab here appears to have started life as a 1980s Ford Granada (European market) station wagon. I’m guessing that it’s a one-off.
